The Essential Craft Skills – Core Proficiencies course is a hands-on foundation for new and early-career technicians, building the core mechanical skills, reliability awareness, and work
practices required for safe and effective maintenance. Participants learn how equipment fails and develop essential skills in measurement, fastening, sealing, lubrication, inspection, and communication—forming the technical base for all future precision maintenance training.

• Apply practical math in field settings without reliance on calculators
• Accurately use measurement tools including micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, & gauges
• Understand fits and tolerances and identify them through measurement
• Correctly select and tighten threaded fasteners
• Recognize effects of material and lubrication on torque
• Install gaskets and seals properly while avoiding common causes of failure
• Identify lubricant types, proper applications, and common lubrication failures
• Describe the basic operation and failure modes of motors, pumps, fans, compressors
• Understand bearing types, loads, sealing methods, and failure indicators
• Understand power transmission systems and their common failure points
• Recognize and interpret major pneumatic and hydraulic components and failures
• Communicate findings using objective data and clear terminology
• Report equipment conditions effectively to peers and supervisors
